CHASE STAND OVER CLAIMS THAT INDAVER USED OUTDATED REPORT
Cork Harbour Alliance for a Safe Environment (CHASE) stand over claims that Indaver Ireland quoted outdated World Health Organization (WHO) reports regarding the health effects of dioxins, when later reports confirmed dioxins as a Class 1 human carcinogen.
Indaver Ireland consistently quote a 1996 WHO report with regard to incineration. The WHO in 1998 stated the 'principal controllable sources of dioxin production are waste incinerators'.
Furthermore, the WHO was a key participant in policy formulation for the Stockholm Convention (On Persistent Organic Pollutants) which Ireland adopted on the 23 May 2001. The Stockholm Convention policy focuses on the phasing out of the 12 most dangerous persistent organic pollutants, and recommends the 'reduction and ultimate elimination of dioxins and furans'
(Art 5). Industrial combustion, specifically waste incinerators, is recognized to be a major source of these pollutants.
The reason the Stockholm Convention says these pollutants are to be phased out is because of their harmful effects on human health and the environment.
A spokesperson for CHASE said "What is quite clear here is that selected quotes are being used to support incineration, when the organizations or documents being quoted may not necessarily support incineration at all."
"At the end of the day, dioxins and furans are considered toxic enough to be globally phased out, and incinerators are one of the major sources of these substances. The logical conclusion is that if the Ringaskiddy incinerator is built the health of some people in Cork Harbour, most likely of young and unborn children, will be damaged."
