CHASE Press Release - 20 April, 2010
BURST WATER MAIN BLOCKS CAR ACCESS TO HAULBOWLINE - INCINERATOR SITE SUBMERGED AGAIN

Flooding on the Ringaskiddy peninsula this morning blocked car access to the Naval Base at Haulbowline Island, necessitating the ferrying by truck of naval personnel to Haulbowline Island.

The flooding, caused by a broken water main, resulted in over 180 cars being stranded on the road beside the proposed Indaver Incinerator site. The entire length and over half the width of the proposed site is currently submerged.

An Bord Pleanala currently await information on flood mitigation measures from Indaver Ireland, before issuing a final decision on planning for the proposed incinerators.

CHASE Chairperson, Mary O’Leary said, “Again and again we see how vulnerable this site is to flooding. It is bad planning to build a high-risk Sevesco plant in this enclosed and vulnerable peninsula and goes against all guidelines including the recent Flood Management Guidelines and WHO Guidelines for siting of hazardous waste incinerators.

An incinerator with a hazardous waste storage area and hazardous waste trucks delivering waste, could move an event such as this mornings from a management situation for Cork County Council to a Major Event involving the emergency services.”

Cork County Council are currently working on the broken water main.
