CHASE SHOWS ITS SUPPORT FOR HIGH COURT APPELLANTS Dail Protest To Highlight Waste Mis-Management

PRESS RELEASE
For immediate release, April 19, 2004

A large group of Cork Harbour residents are today traveling to Dublin (Dept Kent 7.10am, Arr Houston 9.40am) to show support for the parties making the application to the High Court for a judicial review of the An Bord Pleanala (ABP) decision granting permission to build a 100,000 tonne hazardous waste incinerator at Ringaskiddy, Co Cork.

CHASE will also be staging a protest outside Dail Eireann, the purpose of which is to highlight 'Waste Mis-management' by the current government, and to request a moratorium on incineration until waste prevention and recycling policies have been properly implemented. A number of public representatives will join in the protest, which will take place at 2.00pm.

The High Court application is being made by a group of 11 individuals and Ringaskiddy Residents Association Ltd. The challengers claim that the Bord has infringed their rights to fair procedures, to respect for family life and bodily integrity. They allege that the Bord has breached provisions of the Constitution and EU Law as well as the recently adopted European Convention on Human Rights Act.

A spokesperson for CHASE said " The ABP Senior Planning Inspector recommended on an unprecedented 14 grounds that this proposal be rejected. Among these recommendations were issues such as lack of site selection criteria, and had these been implemented, the site would have failed on all but one of the WHO Guidelines on Site Selection.

CHASE believes that incineration is: . Unsafe - because it poses a serious risk to human health and the Environment; . Unnecessary - because New Technologies Make Incineration Obsolete . Unacceptable - because 30,000 members of the public said no, Cork County

Council said no and the ABP Senior Planning Inspector said no, And CHASE will support the appellants in every way possible."
