Irish Examiner - 28/02/05
THE Government has spent millions trying to protect us from the ill effects of radon gas and tobacco smoke and the unsightly effects of plastic bags, but they seem determined to push ahead with a thermal incineration facility at Ringaskiddy. I love living in this country, where the air, water and food are relatively uncontaminated. We have led the way globally with the smoking ban and plastic bag levy, proving that once the cause is worthy, we are more than willing to row in. For that reason I propose a moratorium on incineration for, say, three years while public and private recycling resources are given the chance to develop properly. Put our taxes into sophisticated recycling plants, not toxic ash and dioxin gas production plants. Mary Collins |
